Local guide
June 2026
We're Sankofa Nights. Four friends from Limburg who started organizing Afrohouse and Funkyhouse events in Maastricht in 2024 because nobody else was doing it. We spend most weekends in this city, either behind the decks or in front of them. New students, exchange students, and visitors ask us the same question all the time: "Where should I go out?" This is the honest answer.
Roto, Cafe Defile, FM Kaffee. You'll find them on and around the Markt, open until six, packed every weekend. Fine for your first night. But Maastricht has more going on than that, and most of it is better.
Built into the old Sphinx ceramics factory in the Sphinxkwartier. High ceilings, raw concrete, serious sound. Two halls: the main one fits 1,100 people, the smaller one around 420. The programming changes constantly: indie bands one weekend, club nights the next, jazz in between. This is where we do Sankofa Nights. If you want Afrohouse in Maastricht, come here. Next time is September 2026 with Liquid Beats. Boschstraat 7, ten minutes from the station on foot.
Van Bommel and Basilica start quiet and turn into clubs after dark. Cliniq is usually 21+ but does student nights on Thursdays. You can walk the whole street in two minutes and hit four different places. No plan? Start here and see what happens.
End of Platielstraat. Small room, fills up fast, the DJs lean house and electronic. Less commercial than the Markt clubs, better music. Our first Sankofa Nights was here in November 2024. Friday nights, get there before midnight.
Stokstraat 5. Wooden beams, vintage posters, the kind of regulars who know the bartender's name. Won Cafe of the Year in 2016 and still earns it. There's a courtyard out back. On warm evenings it fills up and nobody leaves. Open until midnight on weekdays, 2am on weekends. You go for one drink. You leave three hours later.
Kersenmarkt 10, near the Vrijthof. High ceilings, warm lighting, DJs on weekends. Good crowd, not too aggressive. Go here if you want to dance but don't feel like committing to a full club night. Gets packed after midnight.
Wijckerbrugstraat 42, across the bridge. Breakfast place during the day, then DJs and live bands take over Friday and Saturday nights. New wave, house, alternative stuff. Rotating art on the walls. Mixed crowd. Open until 2am weekdays, 3am weekends.
On the Maas. Been going since 2002, runs on volunteers. Concert venue, artist studios, vegan kitchen, bar. All in one building. Monday nights are a tradition. Punk, electronic, experimental, metal. If everything else feels too polished, this is the other end of the spectrum.
Most places are cashless. Dress codes vary: Cavo and Cliniq turn away sportswear and flip-flops, the Markt clubs don't care. Minimum age 18, Cliniq is 21+ on regular nights. Muziekgieterij has lockers you can book from your phone for €3.50. Biking home is normal here. Lock your bike.
The Markt is fine for night one. After that, explore.
